How is Apex Build different to the original Apex Line?

Instead of having two separate formulas—one for brush-on application and one for sculpting—we have created a versatile 2-in-1 product. This means that Apex Build can be applied either in thin coats using a brush or sculpted like your regular bead method. We believe this functionality is important because of the following:

• A common issue with many BIABs (Builder in a Bottle) is their sticky texture, which is caused by a low viscosity of the product. This can create limitations for nail technicians who may not feel confident with sculpting products or may unintentionally apply too much product, leading to the risk of undercuring. Considering the high demand for this service in salons nationwide, we wanted to address these concerns and minimize the risks for nail technicians. Our goal was to create a product that can be safely and easily brushed on, just like gel polish, providing a smoother application process and reducing the chances of undercuring.

• Another significant drawback of many BIABs (Builder in a Bottle) is their unsuitability for bead sculpting, as their formulas closely resemble that of a base coat, resulting in improper curing. Our aim was to develop a product that offers both maximum opacity for a BIAB and proper curing within just 60 seconds, while also emitting lower heat. This ensures a safer and more efficient application process for bead sculpting, allowing nail technicians to achieve the desired results with confidence and ease.

• Apex Strengthen was easy to soak off but lacked strength, whereas Apex Extend offered great strength but was challenging to remove quickly.

• With Apex Build, we aimed for a perfect viscosity that allows for a flawless finish even when brushed on. This feature is particularly useful when working with clients who have thin nail plates or struggle with exothermic reactions. Thin layers help prevent heat build-up.

How is it different from SMART BASE?

Apex Build differs from SMART BASE in terms of formulation, color opacity, and strength. This product line has been specially designed to complement Smart Base. Although they have different formulations, they can be used together. All Apex Build colors are highly pigmented, making them an excellent match for the semi-sheer, natural-looking colors offered by the Smart Base line.

In terms of strength, we would rate Apex Build at 3/5, while Smart Base stands at 2/5. When it comes to strengthening properties, it's important to note that at Gellifique, we do not consider soak-off gels and true hard gels to be the "same product" from a chemistry perspective. Hard gels will always provide more strength and are therefore more suitable for nail extensions compared to any soak-off builder in a bottle.

For comparison purposes, our hard gel lines are categorized as 3.5/5 for strength with Advance Builder Gel and 5/5 for Pro Care Hard Gel.

Is this a 2-in-1 product?

In short, yes. Apex Build can be applied as a "base layer." For example, you can use it as a base coat, cure it, apply a slip layer, and then sculpt your bead. However, nail bed structures and client retention can vary. Therefore, we recommend the application to include: a bonder (dehydrator), an acid-free primer (only if necessary, as not all nails require it), a thin coat of product, or a microcrystal base coat, followed by your regular sculpting technique.

It's important to mention that products marketed as "no need for primer, base, etc." often contain high quantities of acids to improve adhesion. Now, ask yourself this: Would you rather have control over what and how much you apply to your clients' nails, or would you prefer to give that control away to someone else? Remember, not all nails require excessive quantities of methacrylic acids—in fact, some nails really don't!
