Important Update on EU REACH Microplastics Regulation

On 25th September 2023, the EU Commission introduced the EU REACH restriction on microplastics, marking a significant move in combating microplastics pollution. Given that EU cosmetic regulations are aligned with those of the UK and this initiative represents a shift towards "greener choices", it's highly probable that the UK will follow suit. So, what implications does this have for gel nail polish or UV/LED curable glitter products? As always, we're here to keep you informed.

What does this mean?

The new rules intend to prohibit the sale of products containing intentionally added microplastics that can be released during use, including cosmetics. The official definition of 'microplastics' encompasses all synthetic polymer particles smaller than 5mm that are organic, insoluble, and resistant to degradation.

How does this affect our industry?

Many nail cosmetics, including some of our products, incorporate glitters, which fall under this microplastics definition. Specifically, this pertains to nail and gel polish formulas that contain such glitters.

What's the status of our products?

At present in line with the available information, the products we offer i.e. UV/LED gel polishes with glitters, aren't subjected to this ban. The restrictions do not cover:

• Synthetic polymer microparticles mixed and used at industrial sites.
• Microparticles that are permanently integrated into a solid matrix during their intended use.
