BIAB Flexibility vs Rigidity

A BIAB (Builder in a Bottle) builder has often been marketed as an all-in-one product, eliminating the need for other building or sculpting products. However, these claims can lead to nail allergies, health problems, and service breakdowns, costing you both time and money.

A soak-off product cannot be made rigid enough after polymerisation to offer reliable nail extension services without chipping or lifting. For nail bed extensions, rigidity is required, which involves specific chemical processes. If a BIAB product is too rigid, it will lift from the softer parts of the natural nail around the cuticle area. Some products may be laden with pure acrylic acid to minimize these issues with lifting. While this may help, acrylic acid dehydrates and thins out the natural nails, causing various nail health problems.

Products marketed as HEMA-free or IBOA-free are often formulated too rigid for nail overlays, requiring aggressive preparation of natural nails for the product to adhere. This aggressive preparation can lead to nail damage over time.

• Rigidity and Flexibility Balance: According to studies, nail enhancement products need to maintain a balance between rigidity and flexibility to prevent lifting and chipping (Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2019).
• Chemical Composition: Products containing acrylic acid can increase adhesion but at the cost of nail health (International Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2021).
